Standard Sock

Spread the love

Materials
100g fingering weight (28sts/4”) sock yarn
* The sample is a scrappy sock. I used two different colors of Patons Kroy, some
Handmaiden Casbah, and a mystery yarn…I cannot remember what it is…
*A note on yarn selection*
I like a sturdy wool/nylon blend of yarn. Something that holds up well. I want a long
service from my socks after all the time I put in making them. For this pattern I would
recommend sock yarn that knits to 28sts/4”. Some examples are: Patons Kroy, Cascade
Heritage, Koigu, Drops Fabel, Tosh Sock, Knitpicks Hawthorne or Felici.
This is only a fraction of what is available. There are also some spectacular Independent
Dyers out there whose sock yarn is magical. Check out Ravelry and Instagram for
inspiration

Sock Pattern
Toe:
Using Judy’s Magic Cast On, CO 12 (16, 18) sts each needle. 24 (32, 36) sts total.
Increase for Toe:
Round 1 – k all sts
Round 2 – inc 4 sts as follows:
N1: k1, kf&b, k to last 2 sts, kf&b, k1
N2: k1, kf&b, k to last 2 sts, kf&b, k1
Rep last 2 rounds until you have 28 (32, 36) sts on each needle for a total of 56 (64, 72) sts.
Foot:
This is where you customize length: Continue in st st (knitting every round) until sock is approx.
3” from back of heel when tried on.
*Tip: keep track of how many rounds you work to make matching the next sock a piece of cake!
Gusset Increase:
Round 1 – inc 2 sts as follows:
N1: k
N2: k1, kf&b, k to last 2 sts, kf&b, k1
Round 2 – k all sts
Rep last two rounds until there are 44 (54, 62) sts on N2. (N1 st count does not change)
Turn the Heel:
First k sts on N1.
You will now work short-rows back and forth on the sts on N2 only. Instructions are as follows:
Row 1 (RS) – k 30 (36, 41), kf&b, k1, w&t.
Row 2 (WS) – p 19 (21, 23) pf&b, p1, w&t.
Row 3 (RS) – k 17 (19, 21), kf&b, k1, w&t.
Row 4 (WS) – p 15 (17, 19) pf&b, p1, w&t.
Row 5 (RS) – k 13 (15, 17), kf&b, k1, w&t.
Row 6 (WS) – p 11 (13, 15) pf&b, p1, w&t.
Row 7 (RS) – k 9 (11, 13), kf&b, k1, w&t.
Row 8 (WS) – p 7 (9, 11) pf&b, p1, w&t.
N2 now has 52, (62, 70) sts. You will have just completed a WS row. Turn to the RS, knit to end
of N2, picking up the wrapped sts as you go.
Leg:
Go back to working in the round. (If you have slight gaps where the heel flap meets the leg of the
sock pick up one extra st in that gap and dec it out on the next round) Continue working st st
until leg is 5-7” long. Try on as you go to determine what length you like.
**yarn amounts given are for a boot length leg, or approx. 6-8”. For a significantly
longer sock leg you may need more yarn**
Cuff:
Finish sock with 1 inch of ribbing. Options: 1×1 rib (k1, p1 repeated to end), 2×2 rib (k2, p2
repeated to end), 3×1 rib (k3, p1 rep to end)
BO using a stretchy method.
Heel Flap:
Work sts on N1.
Heel flap is now worked back and forth on N2 sts.
Row 1 (RS) – picking up any wrapped sts as you go,
k39 (46, 52), ssk, turn,
Row 2 (WS) – sl1, p26 (30, 34), p2tog, turn,
Row 3 (RS) – sl1 *k1, sl1, repeat from * 13 (15, 17)
times, ssk, turn,
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until all heel sts have been
worked. N2 now holds 28 (32, 36) sts. St count total of
56 (64, 72).
